A Tableful of Books
Some books really stick with you. But if you're anything like me, you might only remember what you felt when reading them, and not much of the actual storyline. And yet, somehow the books become signifiers and catalysts for telling my own story (at least of me telling my story to myself).
All in the Timing circumvented my understanding of language and meaning. Slaughterhouse-Five challenged my perception of memory and time. Circe changed my expectations of life and of myself.
All of that, and I couldn't quite tell you the how or the why of it. Even for my own storyline, my memory doesn't seem to quite latch on to details in a permanent way.
And so, I find other ways of understanding my self and my story. The symbols I collect—books, places, songs, plants, films, jewellery, beloved animals and people—each become a piece of the story that I tell myself of my self.
Whatever your relationship to memory or to your story—I hope you find meaning and beauty in your iteration of this life.
If you are looking for an interesting read, these are a few of my recent favourites.
And for you fantasy lovers out there, I am currently mid-series on the Wheel of Time, and it's a very enjoyable read.
